George Kopits is a renowned expert in macroeconomic policy and public finance with longstanding experience in the area of fiscal and monetary analysis. He has held numerous prominent public roles, most recently serving as a member of the Public Finance Council in Portugal (2012-22) and as the founding chair of the Fiscal Council in Hungary (2009-11). Previously, he was a member of the Monetary Council of the National Bank of Hungary (2004-09), an Assistant Director at the International Monetary Fund (1974-2003), and a financial economist at the U.S. Treasury Department. Alongside his policymaking roles, he has provided economic policy advice and technical assistance to governments across Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, while also consulting for major organisations including the OECD, the World Bank, and the European Parliament. On the academic front, Professor Kopits has held visiting appointments at prominent institutions such as Bocconi, CEU, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins universities, and has authored numerous professional publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Georgetown University and is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
